US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice cited Indonesia as a world success story, and it is. Steady, aggressive police and intelligence work since the October 2002 Bali bombing has made clear progress. There have been setbacks, and likely will be more.
 A recent poll showed that 98.5% of Indonesian Muslims opposed suicide bombing for any reason. On the other hand, radicalism continues.

President warns of problems if Freeport closed

 President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Thursday Indonesia would face legal consequences as well as other problems if it closed PT Freeport Indonesia.
“There will be legal consequences, international arbitration, disruption in the investment climate and worker lay-offs,” he said at a press conference held after a cabinet meeting at the palace.

Rice: Indonesia an Example of Tolerance and Moderation

Indonesia serves as an example for countries struggling to reconcile racial, ethnic and religious conflicts, says Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Rice and Indonesian Foreign Minister Noer Hassan Wirajuda appeared at a joint press conference after meeting for discussions in Jakarta, Indonesia, March 14.
“Here in Indonesia, the deserved reputation for tolerance and inclusion and for the celebration of diversity is indeed an inspiration for the entire world,” Rice said.

Marubeni to buy Indonesian coal mines for $3.2b

Japan’s Marubeni Corp. and its local partners are in the final stages of negotiations to acquire two coal-mining firms in Indonesia from PT Bumi Resources Tbk for about 3.2 billion dollars, a report said Saturday.
The consortium, led by Indonesian firm Renaissance Capital, plans to buy PT Arutmin Indonesia and PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, quoting trading house Marubeni’s president Nobuo Katsumata.

RI`s garment imports from China soar by 800 %

Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said Indonesia`s textile imports from China during January to November 2005 have soared and for some items the increase has reached 800 %.

“That has soared 800 percent are woven clothes, T-shirts and underwear. But the total value was not big, it increased from US$1 million to US$9 million,” Mari said after a discussion on flow of Chinese products to Indonesia here Saturday.

Axa in $575m buy as profit jumps

Axa Asia Pacific Holdings has purchased two businesses in Hong Kong and Indonesia for $575 million in its biggest acquisition since listing in 1996.
Also, the wealth management and life insurance group on Tuesday reported a 6 per cent increase in net profit to $542 million for the calendar year 2005.
